The repeater has two channels for bi-directional operation from a master to a slave and vice versa. Each channel has a direct signal path from a receiver (E1) to a transmitter (S). The path exhibits a maximum delay time of 0.2-0.8 bit times of telegrams between actuator sensor-interface telegrams. The channels have another signal path with a receiver (E2), which checks the voltage pulse of each telegram and initiates the respective transmitter in the case of invalid signal in order to cancel or change start-out telegrams for detecting whether the master or slave is defective or not.
