Device for mechanically processing or checking workpieces in a machine tool (10) comprises at least one signal transmitter (3) generating a linear primary signal parallel to the processing/measurement plane (13), and at least one signal receiver (4) on a support (1) that is suitable for detecting from the primary signal positional deviations of the support and for converting them into secondary signals whose amplitude is proportional to the extent of the deviation. A signal-actuated motor-driven actuating drive (5) displaces a tool holder (16) on the support relative to the primary signal until the secondary signal is zero.
