The method involves determining the reduced maximum drive moment (Mred) as a function of the track longitudinal gradient (n). The reduced maximum drive moment is supplied by a drive unit or by a drive wheel. A maxima of reduced maximum drive moment is given in track longitudinal gradient increasing in traveling direction.
