The engine has an operating region (3) with a crank shaft (5), cylinder (7), piston (4), connecting rod (8), fly wheel (6) and an air inlet (38) including electronically controllable inlet valve (10). Atmospheric air is sucked through the inlet valve and the sucked air is compressed by the piston. Electronically controllable injection nozzle (42) is provided for injection of compressed-and/or pressurized air from a storage unit through an ignition channel (41). An air outlet (43) is provided with an electronically controllable outlet valve (11). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a compressed air engine.
