Flat layer formation involves utilizing well-known diamond coating technology, particularly a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coating process. A workpiece (2) before coating is embedded in a bed (3) made of granular material with a surface. The surface is coated in such a manner that a free surface formed by the bed aligns with the level of the workpiece surface, which is to be coated. The diamond coating is carried out by integrating the workpiece surface and a surface area of the bed adjacent to the workpiece surface.
