The arrangement has an operating device (2), a temperature-dependent resistor, and an ignition circuit (7) for producing an ignition voltage for a high pressure discharge lamp (5). The temperature-dependent resistor has a network (1) of thermistors (11) connected in parallel and in series. The thermistors are shunt by a bypass switch (3), and the temperature-dependent resistor is connected in series to the high pressure discharge lamp and to the ignition circuit, where the thermistors are high-temperature conductors. The bypass switch is arranged parallel to the temperature-dependent resistor. An independent claim is also included for a method for starting and operating a high pressure discharge lamp.
