The method involves computing prognosticated temporal characteristics for prospective values of engine operating parameters based on actual values and changing rates of the parameters. A predicted value is determined for increase of fuel consumption and another predicted value is determined for dilution rate of engine oil with fuel due to regeneration procedure, which is carried out during calculation of the prognosticated temporal characteristics, in the exhaust gas treatment device. A regeneration request is generated when the predicted values lie below pre-determined threshold values. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling regeneration procedures in an exhaust gas treatment device in a motor vehicle.
