The network has nodes for controlling network devices e.g. traffic illumination devices, which are assigned to respective nodes of the network, where each node in the network has an addressing that permits an identification of the nodes in the network. One of the network devices is separably connected with an external memory (14). The external memory stores the addressing of the nodes assigned to the network device, and data contents of the external memory are conserved during the separation of a connection (2) to the network device. An independent claim is also included for a method for initial operation of a network device in a network.
