The method involves connecting an automatic manual transmission with an internal combustion engine via an automatic starting clutch that is selectively formed as a friction clutch. A transmission controller communicates with an engine controller via a data link. A short-term simultaneous operation of an accelerator and a brake assembly is allowed by a defined coupling torque during a starting process. Arrangements for protection of the starting clutch are operated after a lapse of a preset time period, based on a combined operation of the accelerator and the brake assembly.
