The method involves moving a set of strand halves to each other in two planes during formation of wave-like coils over one another. Coil sides are located on top of each other in upper and lower layers. Coil heads of the lower strand halves are moved opposite to coil heads of the upper strand halves around a winding pitch. Prefabricated surface phase conductors of a multi phase wave winding (14) are successively inserted in a stator laminated core (13) of a stator (12). An independent claim is also included for an electrical machine comprising a distributed multi phase wave winding.
