The mat (1) has a base frame (10), and a cover plate (20) mounted in the base frame. A stopping unit (30) e.g. grid or frame, is arranged in the cover plate, and is reversibly pivoted from an idle position into a stopping position. The cover plate is formed as an actuating plate, which has contacts arranged on its lower side for activating an escalator (F). The stopping unit is secured in the stopping position by a holding device (42), which is formed by a locking hinge. The stopping unit is pivotably supported at a side of the cover plate pointing to the escalator.
