The method involves driving a valve needle (13) that is hydraulically coupled with the piezoelectric actuator (12). A frequency analysis of voltage signal detected at the piezoelectric actuator is carried out. The frequency analysis comprises a collection of a periodic time of oscillation contained in the voltage signal.
