The method involves subjecting a bar-shaped wood component (14) to temporally change bending force and measure a bending of the wood component caused by the bending force. A hysteresis curve is measured from the temporally changing bending force and the bending, where the hysteresis curve is provided with a hysteresis surface. A hysteresis curve characteristic value, which correlates with the hysteresis surface from the hysteresis curve, is determined. A signal is output when the characteristic value exceeds a given desired value. An independent claim is also included for a wood component testing device for non-destructively testing bar-shaped wood components, comprising a bending device.
