The ventilator (1) has a ventilator wheel (2) connected with an electric motor (3). The electric motor has a rotor (25) formed of permanent magnet and a stator (15). The stator has three stator coils (16,18,20). A control unit (4) is connected to the three stator coils, and has switch unit (5) connected in series. Partial switches (6, 7, 8) of each switch unit are provided for activating the respective stator coil for successive switching-on or switching-off in temporal manner. The component current is partly compensated over the partial switches. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling the ventilator.
