The method involves comparing a characteristic value (T1), which is determined during a diagnosing process for an operating variable of an internal combustion engine for a time period, with a preset value (T2) by a comparing unit (45). An error (F) is detected, when a difference between the values exceeds a threshold value (S1) for the time period. The error determined during the process is corrected only during another diagnosing process, when another preset threshold value (S2) does not exceed third threshold value, and when the third value is provided based on the former threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a device for diagnosing an operating variable determination of an internal combustion engine.
