The method involves assigning a character e.g. letter, to two numerical keys (103) of a keyboard (102) e.g. cellular phone keyboard, and detecting the operation of each key as input of the character. The keys are arranged in form of a two-dimensional matrix. An additional character is assigned to the keys, and a sequence of operation of the keys is detected. A decision is made by checking whether detecting operation of each key is an input of the assigned character or an input of the assigned additional character, based on the detected sequence of operation of the keys. An independent claim is also included for a device for entering characters with a keyboard.
