The device (2) has sensors (6) e.g. radar sensors, for detection of an ahead traveling vehicle (10), and a control unit (12) for evaluation of receiving signals. A display unit (14) is provided for representation of warning notices. The sensors, the control unit and the display unit are integrated with components (16) of a portable electronic device e.g. navigation device or multimedia device, in a common housing and form a portable structural unit. An object recognition software is provided for digital processing of signals provided by the sensors.
