The device has a fuel injection amount adjustment unit adjusting fuel injection amount of a cylinder to be tested towards leaner mixture. Actual characteristics of irregular operation (M) resulting from the lean adjustment are determined. The adjustment unit determines an actual lambda value (lambda) from deviation of the actual characteristics of the irregular operation from ideal characteristics before the lean adjustment. The adjustment unit adjusts fuel injection amount according to a deviation (delta lambda) of the actual lambda value from an expected lambda value (lambda start).
