The method involves systematic varying of the beginning of a fuel injection by temporal varying of an appropriate controlling factor during a test operation. A fuel injector individual torque or an appropriate size is detected or determined for the operating periods with different beginnings of fuel injection. The temporal situation of the controlling factor is determined, which is assigned in a maximum torque or the appropriate size. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program for the execution an operating method; (2) a controlling or regulating device for an internal combustion engine; and (3) an internal combustion engine, particularly for a motor vehicle.
