The method involves systematic varying of the beginning of a fuel injection by temporal varying of an appropriate controlling factor during a test operation. A fuel injector individual torque or an appropriate size is detected or determined for the operating periods with different beginnings of fuel injection. The temporal situation of the controlling factor is determined, which is assigned in a maximum torque or the appropriate size.
