The method involves carrying out pre-injections of predeterminable preinjection of fuel into a corresponding combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine before main injections adjacent to the pre-injections by an injection element. The preinjection is varied in time compared with the following pre-injections. The preinjection is varied based on a signal characterizing temperature of the combustion engine. Larger preinjection of the fuel at certain value of temperature is injected in relation to another value of temperature, where the latter value is greater than the former value.
