The method involves determining a value of a voltage signal of an oxygen (7) probe or an anticipatory process of the voltage signal. The value of the voltage signal is to be anticipated (a) during a defined, actual relative oxygen filling degree of a catalyzer (6). The measuring of the actual voltage signal (b) of the oxygen probe during discharge or filling of the oxygen storage of the catalyzer depends on the oxygen filling degree. The determination of the difference of the oxygen filling degree (c) assigned to an identical value of the voltage signal. An independent claim is included for a device for determination of dwell time of an oxygen probe for measurement of the oxygen storage capacity of the catalyzer of a motor vehicle.
