The device has a tensioning roller carrier (9) with a tensioning roller (10) supported at a load-bearing construction unit (1). The tensioning roller is force-impinged such that a certain pre-tensioning force is applied against a traction unit (7) e.g. endless belt, for ensuring a pre-determined tension of the traction unit. A piston cylinder unit (11) is connected with the tensioning roller carrier and the load-bearing construction unit such that the pre-tensioning force applied to the traction unit is reduced based on certain operating conditions of a combustion engine. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a tensioning device for a traction unit of a traction unit drive of a combustion engine.
