The filter device (100) has a receiving space (110) for receiving granular filter media (112) and a compaction device (138). The compaction device has two compaction elements (136, 140), which are fixed against each other. The compaction device adjusts the density of the filter media such that the density of the filter media in a filtration phase is larger than in a cleaning phase. The filter media is hardened in the filtration phase and is expanded in the cleaning phase. Volume of the receiving space is modified by the compaction device. A closure device (130) selectively opens the space. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a filter device comprising a granular filter media.
