The device has a shut-off valve (26) by which fuel flowing from a fuel high pressure storage (20) is stopped in a discharge area over a shut-off line (34). An adjusting mechanism (24) supplying fuel to a fuel high-pressure pump (16) has a movable control piston. A switching device (60) alternatively connects the shut-off line with a discharge line (35), in which a flow throttle (46) is arranged. The shut-off line is connected with a bypass (62) opening an inlet (11) to the fuel high-pressure pump.
