The reward system rewards the return of a shopping cart to a collection station. The customer is preliminarily awarded the bonus when paying for the merchandise. A shopping cart is associated with the preliminary bonus. The bonus is permanently awarded once the shopping cart has been returned to the collection station. This system advantageously requires no reading/writing devices or coupon printers subject to extensive maintenance and/or at risk of being vandalized in the region of the collection station.
