The method involves monitoring a charging voltage (UL) for determining duration of a charging process or a discharging process. An actual energy linked in a coil (L1) is introduced during determining the duration of the charging process or the discharging process. The charging voltage is reduced by a voltage divider (R1, R2). The energy linked in the coil is determined by a voltage drop over a shunt resistor (R3), which is connected in a current flow (IL) of the coil. A reference voltage of the voltage divider is changed by the voltage drop over the shunt resistor against a mass potential. An independent claim is also included for a device for charging and discharging a piezoelectric element.
