The method involves directing a currency i.e. coin (1a), to an analysis unit after optical visual examination of the currency. A material specific analysis signal is produced by the analysis unit. The analysis signal is compared with a reference signal by an analysis process. The optical visual examination is done by a person, where the currency is made of different metals and the analysis unit has magnetic field sensors (3, 4). The analysis unit is integrated in a cash desk or a mobile cash point or a banknote tester or a coin collector. An independent claim is also included for a coin testing device for testing authenticity of coins.
