The method involves rotating a rotary tool (130) around an axis of rotation (114) and detecting tool contours of sections of the tool at different rotating positions. The tool is rotated in reference rotation over a rotary angle area. The contours detected during the rotating positions are evaluated according to evaluation criteria, and actual tool contours (200, 400) corresponding to an actual rotary position are compared with a comparison contour that is determined by the evaluation tool contours detected during reference rotation.
