The device i.e. ion mobility spectrometer (1), has a carrier gas circuit (5) guiding from a carrier gas outlet (7) of a dosing unit (6) to a carrier gas inlet (3) of an analysis unit (2) and guiding from a carrier gas outlet (4) of the analysis unit to a carrier gas inlet (8) of the dosing unit. The dosing unit is operable in a dilution operation in which a dilution ratio of a through flow resistance (R2) takes a finite value different from zero for summing of an outflow resistance (R1), through flow resistance and an inflow resistance (R3).
