A process for recovering ruthenium from ruthenium or ruthenium-containing noble metal ore ore concentrates, comprising the steps of: A. introducing the material into a strongly alkaline alkali hydroxide melt in the presence of nitrate as the oxidant to form an oxidized melt residue with water-soluble ruthenate (RuO4) 2-, B. Dissolution of the resulting oxidized melt residue in water, C. Addition of a reducing agent, D. Precipitation of the resulting metals, can also be used for the separation of selenium. Optionally, after step B, ruthenium is separated by distillation rather than by precipitation, with steps 5C treatment of the ruthenate-containing solution with an oxidizing agent, 5D distilling off the resulting RuO4, 5E picking up the RuO4 from step 5D in hydrochloric acid. Further subsequent purification steps result in processes for the reprocessing of ruthenium targets.
