The device has a processing device (1) for determining locally limited valid characteristics inputs to an actual residing place of a vehicle. A permanent storage device (5) i.e. semiconductor memory, is provided for storing the inputs in a rest condition of the vehicle. The processing device has a detection device (4) for detection and recognition of road signs, a localization device and an assigning device, where the detection device has a camera (2) and a radio signal receiver. The localization device is provided for detecting the actual residing coordinates of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a motor vehicle.
