The system (10) has a compressor (28) i.e. air compressor, compressing oxidant and mechanically connected with a drive shaft of a main drive machine (36) e.g. electrical direct current motor, by a coupling unit (32) such as a mechanical engagement device e.g. chain drive. The engagement device includes a continuous or stepped gear with which rotational speed of the compressor is varied relative to rotational speed of the shaft. The gear is controlled by mechanical, electromechanical or electronic gear-control so that the compressor receives energy supply for each shaft operational speed. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fuel cells drive system.
