The method involves transferring respective data by the sensors (S1,S2) in predetermined time slots. The controller (ECU) tests the sensors in the predetermined time slots and allocates a respective new time slot to the respective sensor depending on the test. The respective sensor accepts the respective allocation, if the successive sensor is not connected. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a controller for controlling personal protection unit for a vehicle with receiving units for receiving data of serially arranged crash-relevant sensors; (2) a crash-relevant sensor with a transmitter component for data communication to a controller for the control of personal protection unit for a vehicle; and (3) a serial bus system with multiple sensor arrays.
