The method involves determining ultrasonic attenuation and/or sound velocity by a sound converter (1), which is controlled by a pulse-echo process and is utilized as a sound producer and a sound receiver. Bursts detected by the sound converter are reflected at two reflector surfaces (4, 5) during filtering of a material mixture (10). The reflector surfaces are arranged opposite to the converter in different distances to the converter. Echo-bursts reflected by the reflector surfaces are evaluated for determining the ultrasonic attenuation and/or sound velocity. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining state and/or state change of a material mixture.
