The method involves forming a fuel cell system for reaction of fuel with an oxidant, where the fuel cell system is switchable between a resting condition and an operating condition. Power is supplied to a load in resting condition by an energy storage device (7). The fuel and/or the oxidant are actively moved into the fuel cell system in the resting condition. Movement of the oxidants in the resting condition is converted by controlling flow machines (11e, 11f). An independent claim is also included for a fuel cell system comprising a fuel cell device.
