The method involves determining a steering rate, and a vehicle speed. The motor speed desired values of an electric motor (22) is determined depending on the steering rate and the vehicle speed, where the motor speed desired values are increased at constant vehicle speed, and the steering rate is increased monotonously to a maximum value. The maximum value at a range of a parking speed of the vehicle and maximum values above the parking speed are provided. The electric motor is controlled in accordance with the motor speed desired values. An independent claim is also included for a hydraulic servo steering system of a motor vehicle with a pump.
