The method involves attaching a trailer to a vehicle, particularly a passenger car. A bottom plate is formed by the vehicle and the attached trailer. The mass detected from acceleration processes or bottom plate is compared with the mass detected from deceleration processes of the vehicle or bottom plate. The mass detected from acceleration processes or bottom plate is connected to the decelerated trailer on availability of significant difference between both the mass-values.
