A cathode has an incandescent emitter (1), which is made from a material, which emits electrons thermally. An emission layer (3) having a thickness of 0.05-20mu m is applied partially or completely on the incandescent emitter, where the emission layer is made up of a material having a lower electron work function than the material of the incandescent emitter. A diffusion barrier layer is also arranged between the incandescent emitter and the emission layer.
