The mask (3) for mounting on a motor-block (2) for thermal coating of a cylinder bore subjected in the motor-block, comprises a rotatable bearing surface (6) for bearing at a cylinder cover surface (4) in an area spaced from the cylinder bore, and a rotating cavity (7) within the bearing surface. The mask is selected on a diameter of the cylinder bore to be coated. The rotating cavity is limited towards interior through a rotating lip that is intended in the mask overlying from the cylinder cover surface and surrounds a through opening. The mask (3) for mounting on a motor-block (2) for thermal coating of a cylinder bore subjected in the motor-block, comprises a rotatable bearing surface (6) for bearing at a cylinder cover surface (4) in an area spaced from the cylinder bore, and a rotating cavity (7) within the bearing surface. The mask is selected on a diameter of the cylinder bore to be coated. The rotating cavity is limited towards interior through a rotating lip that is intended in the mask overlying from the cylinder cover surface and surrounds a through opening, whose diameter maximally corresponds to a diameter of the cylinder bore. The mask is formed as a one-way mask, a sheet-metal formed part or a rotary element. A rotatable collecting area is intended for the reception of the coating material passing during the coating process at an interior side of the mask. The interior area of the mask is formed essentially cylindrical and projects itself to the cylinder bore. An independent claim is included for a method for thermally coating a cylinder bore subjected in the motor-block.
