The method involves receiving a data loading request from a client, and loading a full resolution volume dataset on a server. A rendering request is received from the client. A high quality image is rendered from the dataset on the server based on predetermined rendering parameters specified by the client. A low quality image is rendered on the server from a low resolution sub-sampled copy of the dataset. A pixel mask is generated based on the images on the server, and the mask is transmitted from the server to the client. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system for rendering volume comprising an unit for transmitting a pixel mask (2) a machine readable medium comprising set of instructions to perform a volume rendering method.
