A system and method for detecting a road curve as a vehicle approaches the curve for automatically providing road curvature information and controlling vehicle speed. The system uses a location device and a map database to know the position of the vehicle. Depending on the speed of the vehicle, the system generates a curvature profile for different curvature data point profile for the points of curvature at or about the turn in front of the vehicle. The desired speed profile and the actual vehicle speed are compared at each profile point to determine if the vehicle is driving too fast for the target speed. The acceleration calculation may be enhanced by providing a driver corner mode input that the vehicle operator may select based on how aggressively the driver wishes to have the system operate to slow the vehicle.
