The system has an ignition plug (10) attached to an internal combustion engine (40). The plug exhibits a central electrode (110) and a ground electrode (130). A discharge chamber (140) is defined between the electrodes. An energy source supplies ignition energy to the plug. The plug is configured in such a manner that the gas in the chamber is carried with high temperature and high pressure. A multi-stage energy input device (300) inputs the energy of the energy source into the plug in multiple of stages.
