The system has a particle material (PM) filter arrangement (34) including an upstream end for receiving an exhaust gas. An inlet heating element (35) is divided into zones, and is arranged at a distance from the upstream end, where each zone includes sub-zones. The heating element heats the exhaust gas to a regeneration temperature. A control module (44) selectively activates one of the selected zones for activating regeneration in downstream parts of the filter arrangement by the selected zone, and deactivates the unselected zones. An independent claim is also included for a method for particle filter regeneration.
