The arrester has end fittings (3) arranged on opposite sides of a varistor block (1). A wedge holds glass-fiber reinforced plastic bars or rope (9) in a through hole of one of the fittings. A slot is pre-formed in longitudinal direction of the bars whose base is rounded off, where the wedge is engaged in a section of the slot. The block is made of metallic oxide e.g. zinc oxide, and the fittings are made of a metal e.g. aluminum. A plastic external housing (5) is formed by spraying low-viscosity silicone. Another section of the slot is filled with the plastic material of the housing.
