The method involves operating a diesel engine (12) during a cycle to drive a piston in a cylinder (40) without energizing a fuel injector (42) of the cylinder. Pressure data of the cylinder is acquired for a predetermined crank angle window during the cycle. The injector is energized for an energizing time during another cycle. Another pressure data of the cylinder is acquired for the window during the latter cycle. A pressure ratio difference average (PRDA) is calculated from the two pressure data. The operation of the injector is modified based on the PRDA value. The energizing time is associated with a pilot shot from the injector. An independent claim is also included for a control module comprising a fuel injection module.
