The camshaft has a cam attached to a shaft pipe by a through-opening. A press fit is present between a lateral surface of the through-opening and a corresponding lateral surface of the shaft pipe, where the press fit fixes the cam on the shaft pipe. The cam and the shaft pipe are made of chromium containing alloy. The lateral surfaces of the through-opening and/or the shaft pipe exhibit surface conversion that contains chromium oxide. The lateral surfaces are processed with a steel-etching agent and are heated with hot air. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a camshaft for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
