The shaft has a shaft pipe (10) welded with a blind flange, where the shaft pipe and the blind flange are made of steel. The shaft pipe and/or blind flange have a bearing surface (12) for antifriction bearings of the hollow shaft. The shaft pipe and/or blind flange are hardened locally in the area of the bearing surface. The shaft pipe and/or blind flange consist of steel with carbon content between 0.38 and 0.45 percentage. Carburizing depth within the area of the bearing surface is about 0.2 to 1.3 mm. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a hollow shaft for an internal-combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
