The instrument has a rod-shaped instrument (3) with tips (4, 5) and held by an instrument holder, where the tips are different from one another. The instrument (3) is supported in an inner side of the holder in a removable manner and moved along a longitudinal axis of the holder in two fixed final conditions. One of three markers (6, 7, 8) is moved together with the instrument (3) relative to the holder. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a method for detecting a condition of a pre-calibrated multi-function instrument (B) a program storage medium or computer program product with a computer program for executing a method for detecting a condition of a pre-calibrated multi-function instrument.
