The process for potabilizing water from polluted, briny or salt water for human consumption, comprises filtrating the water using an element (1), producing sodium hypochlorite (3) and desalinating the water by electrochlorination with part of seawater, mixing the produced sodium hypochlorite with the filtered water (18) and then dechlorinating the mixed water to make it potable. The filtering element is constituted of four successive elements of pumice stone in which water circulates for three minutes per filter. The fourth filtering element retains a portion of dissolved salt. The process for potabilizing water from polluted, briny or salt water for human consumption, comprises filtrating the water using an element (1), producing sodium hypochlorite (3) and desalinating the water by electrochlorination with part of seawater, mixing the produced sodium hypochlorite with the filtered water (18) and then dechlorinating the mixed water to make it potable. The filtering element is constituted of four successive elements of pumice stone in which water circulates for three minutes per filter. The fourth filtering element retains a portion of dissolved salt. The dechlorination is carried out by injecting hydrogen peroxide or bisulfite stored in a tank into the water and into another tank equipped with a stirring device. An independent claim is included for a device for potabilizing water from polluted, briny or salt water.
