The invention relates to a method for estimating the volumetric efficiency and flight of an engine which comprises at least the following steps: the reception of dynamic parameters of the engine, among which the temperature T2 "and the pressure P2" of the gases in the intake reference volume block, the average temperature Tpm of the walls of the breathing block, the pressure P3 of the gas included in the volume near the exhaust valves of the breathing function block and the richness of the injected fuel; the evaluation of the variations of the dynamic parameters of the engine received with respect to reference parameters known a priori for one of the nominal operating points of the given engine; calculating the volumetric efficiency and engine flight from the variations of the dynamic parameters of the engine, the engine speed and coefficients determined for said engine.The invention applies to the control of internal combustion engines.
